Red Lion celebrates the homer by Owen Griffing Cape junior Dom Mangini blasted a first-inning grand slam to lead the Vikings to a 6-3 win over Red Lion in the second round of the DIAA state tournament June 5 at Chris Short Field in Lewes.
"I just love bases loaded," said Mangini. "I just know I can put the ball in the air and score runs."
The Vikings had six hits in the contest. Emmett Wheatley started off the Vikings' extra-base hits with a triple in the top of the first.
"My metality going into it was getting a fastball and hammering it," said Wheatley. "That's exactly what I got, and I was able to capitailize on it."
Senior Max Selders delvered a double, while catcher Aaiden Johnson slammed a two-run homer in the fifth.
"I got a 3-1 heater that got out over the plate," said Johnson. "I didn't think I got it that good, but I guess I got enough of it."

"When I got ahead, I just mixed up my pitches," said Simeone. "I just trusted my defense. They made a lot of plays behind me. We are definitely ready for the next challenge."
"It's a testament to Jack [Simeone] on the mound," said Cape coach Ben Evick. "He did a nice job. He had one bad inning, but stuck with his game plan and got ahead in the counts and got some outs. And when we get Emmett [Wheatley] on [base], he causes all kinds of havoc on the bases with his speed."
Red Lion was led by Logan Hill, who pitched a complete game and went 3-for-3 at the plate. Owen Griffing had a homer for the visiting Lions.
The Vikings move on to play Caravel Monday, June 8, at home in the quarterfinals.
