Vikings use game as pre-Hawaii warm-up
April 18, 2019

The Cape baseball team left at 2 a.m., Thursday morning for Hawaii, where they will play four games in six days over spring break. Before they departed, they took care of Henlopen Conference business April 17 with a 15-1 thrashing of Woodbridge in Greenwood.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard first, as Luke Johnson went yard with a two-run dinger. They added two more runs in the second and two in the fourth before opening the floodgates, with Jackson Ostroski slamming a two-run homer and Logan Dominick, Robbie Baxley, Timmy Vitella, Johnson and Tyler Husbands picking up RBIs in the inning.

The Vikings had 15 hits in the game.

Grant Evans went 3-for-3 for the Vikings. Johnson went 2-for-4, scoring three. Ryan Gibbons delivered a 2-for-4 performance with two RBIs. Ostroski went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Vitella went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Luke Smailer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Baxley went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Dominick went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“I think we responded well after our last game,” said Cape coach Ben Evick, referring to the 17-4 loss to Appoquinimink. “Kids were focused and ready to get back to work. I think it’s a good way to get ready to play in Hawaii. They play hard-nosed baseball out there.”

Johnson picked up his fourth win for the Vikings, allowing two hits and one run over four innings. He struck out eight batters. Mason Carrow closed things out on the mound pitching the fifth inning with two Ks.

The Vikings will return to Northern Division play Tuesday, April 30, at home with Caesar Rodney.
