December 10, 2018

The Cape Henlopen wrestling team, along with 11 other schools, competed Dec. 7-8 at the Milford Invitational at the Milford Central Academy gym. Cape brought 12 grapplers for the 14 weight classes, but did not compete at 113 and 170.

The competition was sliced into two six-team pools, and each wrestler had to compete against the other five athletes in their weight class. The weight classes in some of the pools were stacked, while others were not as strong. It was all luck of the draw.

The team competition saw Milford the winner with 249 points followed by Smyrna, 223; Sussex Central, 195; St. George’s, 181; Cape Henlopen, 173;  Middletown, 166; William Penn, 143; Hodgson, 138, Delcastle, 133; Laurel, 110; Newark Charter, 94; and Conrad, 89.

Cape’s Anthony Caruso placed first at 132 pounds with a 7-0 injury default over Laurel’s Woo Fosque. Chris Handlin was Cape’s other champion at 195 pounds, with an 8-2 decision over William Penn’s Nasir Dreuitt.

Other Cape top finishers include Tyler Lecates in second in his pool and fourth overall at 285, and Billy Ott second in his pool and third overall at 220. Sam Jones placed third in his pool and sixth overall at 182; Jackson Handlin placed second in his pool and fourth overall at 160, and Juan Lares was fourth in his pool at 152. Finbar Rishko placed third in his pool and sixth overall at 145; Dawaun Johnson was third in his pool and sixth overall at 138, and Mikey Frederick placed fourth in his pool at 126. Carson Kammerer placed third in his pool and sixth overall at 120, while Arthur Bennett was fifth in his pool at 106.

“Overall, we had a good performance,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni. “I'm pleased with how well we wrestled. Nine of the 12 kids placed. We have a tough match Wednesday with Central.”

Cape will host the Golden Knights on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Junior varsity wrestling begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity match.

Beacon will wrestle Mariner at 4 p.m. at Cape prior to the high school matches.
