The No. 4 seed Cape Henlopen boys’ lacrosse team took to the field May 22 like they were late for dinner, scoring a 21-5 victory over 13th-seeded Sanford Prep at Legends Stadium in Lewes.

Junior middie Jack Dennis cranked the rock for five goals and an assist, while JP Heid added four goals and three helpers. Freshman Gabe Best scored a hat trick plus two assists. Luke D’Ambrogi hit the back of the twine twice and assisted on four goals. Andre Currie, Aarin Burton, Ryan Diacont, Finbar Rishko and Liam Zolper each added a goal for the Vikings. Timmy Kelley helped on two goals, while Zolper and Rishko each had one.

“After the score was 2-2, we just went off,” said junior midfielder Jack Dennis. “We played like we like to play. We just made things happen and played an all-around good game. Most of our goals were assisted, and everyone got to play, which is great.”

Cape took an 11-4 lead into the halftime break and didn’t let up in the second half, adding six in the third and coasting in the fourth with four more to finish off the Warriors. A swarming defense allowed only one goal in the second half.

“It’s one more step,” said defender Matt Prestipino. “We just kept pushing the entire game and just didn’t let up. That’s what coach tells us – keep your foot on the gas and keep going. We executed well on offense and the defense didn’t get too sloppy. Overall, I think we did a pretty good job.”

The Vikings outshot the Warriors 41-23, with Cape goalie Baxter Travers making four saves and teammate Sean Griffith making one stop in the fourth quarter. The Vikings took a 23-11 edge in ground balls. Cape face-off specialists Liam Zolper and Michael Martz took a 16-12 advantage over Sanford’s Timothy Lucky.

The 13-4 Vikings will host Archmere Friday, May 25, at Legends Stadium for the DIAA Quarterfinals. They defeated the Auks 15-9 in their first meeting April 7 at Legends.

“It’s definitely going to be a tough game,” Prestipino said.

“They are going to be coming after us for beating them earlier in the season,” said Dennis. “We’ll be ready to go.”
