Vikings make history with victory
April 27, 2021

The Cape Henlopen boys’ volleyball team made history April 26, as they scored the program’s first victory with a 3-1 win over Saint Mark’s in Lewes. The Vikings won 25-13, 11-25, 25-22 and 25-16.

The Vikings were led by Ethan Shuttleworth with 32 assists and 10 digs. Libero Talan Stephens bumped 18 digs, while Alexander Patterson bumped nine digs and knocked down eight kills. Odin Potemski slammed 16 kills, while Nolan Kerstetter, Austin Carey, Gavin Felker, Liam Leishear and Salvatore Oronzio teamed for eight kills, five aces and five digs.

“Tonight was a really good experience for us coaches and our players,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “To get the first win in the program’s history is certainly something we will all remember. I’ve been around high school volleyball in a variety of ways since 2007, but have never been part of a new program. The growth these men have shown has been fantastic. The more they keep learning and retaining, the more we are able to do with them and challenge them.

“Versus Saint Mark’s we did the small things better than we have recently. We served in-bounds at an extremely high rate, while also keeping our first pass on serve-receive and in rally defense in play. We told them post match [one of] the only two stats that really determine if a team will win is the control of the first touch, and tonight we won that. While we understand and acknowledge the significance of this win, we don’t want this to be the only thing we accomplish. We want to continue to grow and push ourselves harder and further.”
