May 23, 2019

“Appoquinimink is a good lacrosse team, much better than a 16 seed,” said Cape coach Mark D’Ambrogi after his top-ranked Vikings weathered an early squall down 3-1 before putting the hammer down to win 17-5.

“I’m glad we got to play a good team in the opening round,” D’Ambrogi continued. “Now we get DMA, who beat Dover 17-3. I can’t ever remember playing them at any time, so that should be interesting.”

Cape got scoring help early in the game from midfielders Will Bragg and Jaden Davis, and defender Landon Best. Long pole defenders Brody McMahon and Ben Weathersby also contributed assists.

“Those guys are huge for us every game. That just gave everyone energy,” said captain Luke D’Ambrogi, who went on to name half the roster. “One game at a time, man. One game at a time.”

Gabe Best led Cape scorers with four goals. He was followed by Greg Boyce, Jack Dennis, Hank D’Ambrogi and Mikey Frederick each with two, while single goals were scored by Bragg, Davis, Blake Gipko, Landon Best and Adem Tekmen.

Thirteen of Cape’s goals were assisted led by Luke D’Ambrogi with four, Gabe Best and Boyce with two each, and single assists from Dennis, Hank D’Ambrogi, Davis, McMahon and Weathersby.

Baxter Travers had three saves in goal, while Sean Griffith had one.

Connor Garrison scored four goals for Appo, while Hunter Wolhar added one.

Brett Forrest had 10 saves for the Jaguars.

Cape outshot Appo 49-9, with an 18-9 advantage in face-offs.

The Cape versus DMA quarterfinal game is scheduled for 5 p.m., Saturday, May 25, at Legends Stadium.
