The Cape boys’ lacrosse team rode the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to the Jersey side April 25 to play the Red Raiders of Ocean City.

The Vikings entered the game with an 8-1 record, while Ocean City stood at 9-1, their only loss to Salesianum. Cape had won the previous two games between evenly matched teams.

Cape was without leading point producer Luke D’Ambrogi, who tweaked a hamstring in practice the day before.

“I handed the game to the seniors,” said coach Mark D’Ambrogi on the boat ride back to Delaware after Cape lost 13-9, collapsing in the middle two quarters. “Not enough face-offs won, not enough saves and too much turning the ball over.”

Cape got off to a great start, so no blaming the boat ride, and led 5-1 early in the second period. The Red Raiders then ran a 9-1 crooked number at the Vikings to take a 10-6 lead into the final period.

Cape awakened, but a 3-3 final period wasn’t enough to get back to level, as the Vikings lost 13-9. They head north Saturday, April 27, to face the once-beaten Archmere Auks.

“I’m hearing people on the boat saying wake-up call,” D’Ambrogi said. “We will learn from the game today and take the positives from it, and use them to make us a better and deeper team.”

The Vikings were led in goal scoring by Gabe Best with four goals, Jack Dennis with three, and Blake Gipko and Hank D’Ambrogi with one apiece.

Cape got assists from Greg Boyce, Best, Dennis and Jaden Davis.

Goalie saves for Cape were Baxter Travers with four and Sean Griffith with one.

Ocean City was led in goals by Trent Laveson with four, and Christian Kuhn and Noam Levy-Smith with three each. Single goals came from Marty Cattie, Anthony Inserra and Billy Kroeger.

Charlie Dahn was credited with nine saves.
