Cape boys’ lax stays hot, rolls unbeaten Smyrna 18-1

April 18, 2019

Don’t sleep on Smyrna, no matter the sport. The Eagles are coming for you, so pay attention. It’s no longer just a wrestling school by the water tower; Smyrna keeps diversifying. The Eagles have three gyms, two turf fields and a separate track.

Smyrna’s 7-0 boys’ lacrosse team came to get a look at Cape April 17. Their pregame approach was first class. Obviously head coach Mike Zulkowski and his staff had coached them up and prepared the Eagles for the moment.

But Cape is an upper-level team; they play fast and don’t make many mistakes. The game was slow to get going, but once the Vikings began to ring the bell, school was in session.

The score was 11-0 at the half and 16-0 after three periods. The final score was 18-1, and told a story of what can happen on the top step of the stairway.

Cape was shut out in the first half of the season opener at the Bullis School, with coach Mark D’Ambrogi asking them, “When are you guys getting off the bus?” They responded by closing down the gap for a 15-7 loss.

Cape’s record improved to 8-1. The Vikings next play at Ocean City, N.J., Thursday, April 25, and at Archmere Saturday, April 27.

Cape was led in goal scoring by Greg Boyce with five and Hank D’Ambrogi with four. Mikey Frederick, Luke D’Ambrogi and Jack Dennis each scored twice, and the Vikings got single goals from Blake Gipko, Gabe Best and Finbar Rishko.

Luke D’Ambrogi had six assists, while Boyce, Dennis, J.P. Heid, Jaden Davis and Gipko each had one.

Luke D’Ambrogi has 13 assists over the last three games.

Sean Griffith and Baxter Travers combined for three saves in shared time for Cape.

Cullen Porter scored for the Eagles, while goalie Matt Miller had 15 saves.
