Cape coach Geoff Shupard watches as his team handles Smyrna. The Cape boys' lacrosse team punched its ticket to the finals of the DIAA state tournament with an 18-5 semifinal win over Smyrna May 27 at Legends Stadium. The No. 2 seed Vikings will meet No. 1 Salesianium in the championship game at noon, Saturday, May 30, at Caesar Rodney High School.
This is the seventh straight season Cape and Sallies have played for the championship.
The Vikings started off strong against Smyrna, scoring the first three goals and going into halftime with a 10-3 lead. The second half was more of the same, as the home squad added eight goals and the stingy defense allowed just two to garner the 18-5 victory.
The victory sets up the rematch with Sallies, which is the only Delaware team to blemish the Vikings' record this season.
"This was a great team win," said senior Ryan Morgan, who tallied five goals and two assists. "We had a lot of assisted goals, which is great. We are going to give it our best shot. We think we have the type of team that could come away with the DIAA trophy. It's going to be a great game."
Seniors Brenner Short and Grant Conway each scored a hat trick, with two assists and and one assist, respectively. A.J. Grapski tallied two goals and four assists, while Liam Crotty hit the twine twice and assistsed on a score.
Mathew Popovich, Braddock Smith and Patrick Healy each scored once. Carter Nemcic helped on three goals.
"Going into today, there's nothing more to it than playing our game," said long pole Eric Uffelman. "We played hard, played physical and we played smart. All it is is Cape Henlopen lacrosse."
"I give Smyrna a lot of credit," said Cape coach Geoff Shupard. "They are improving every year, and they play hard and aggressive lacrosse. It was a good game. Other than a little bit of sloppy play in the second quarter, I thought our guys put together a very good game. We are moving the ball better on offense, our defense continues to be tough, and I was very happy with our ground ball play in the middle of the field."
The last time the Vikings defeated Sallies was 2019. For Shupard, this rematch just adds to the rivalry atmosphere.
"Our games with Salesianum are always high level and very intense, and that’s what comes with having such a good rivalry with a team," he said. "Both teams will be fired up to see each other again."
