Channing Smith, left, and Ryan Morgan celebrate a goal. On a day that would be more conducive for flock of ducks, the Cape boys' lacrosse team moved into the DIAA semifinals with an 18-4 soaking of Newark Charter at Legends Stadium.
Grant Conway moved to 67 goals on the season with a four-goal performance. Channing Smith hit the twine for a hat trick. Carter Nemcic, AJ Grapski, Max Wyshock, Marshall Keys, Ryan Morgan and Brenner Short each had a goal.
Morgan was credited with two assists, while Nemcic, Keys and Mathew Popovich added one helper apiece.
"I thought we put together a four strong quarters which helped us perform well," said Morgan. "We wanted to start the game with high intensity and kept on going from there trying not to let the weather affect us."
Senior goalie Mason Trench and junior Patrick Little each made four and three saves, respectively.
"Defensively, I thought we played very well," said Cape coach Geoff Shupard. "Our defensive middies really set the tone for us early on and that always gets everyone fired up. We were slower offensively in the first half than we want to be, but the boys were able to pick it up and finish the game strong. We are looking forward to getting back to work on Monday."
The No. 2 Vikings will take on No. 6 Smyrna at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 27 at Legends Stadium. Cape defeated the Eagles 14-5 May 8. In the other semifinal, No. 1 Salesianum will take on No. 4 St. Andrew's at Abessinio Stadium in Wilmington.
