Cape boys, Smyrna girls win cross country meet

A  cross country tri-meet Oct. 9, scored six ways from Sunday, featured host Polytech welcoming the boys and girls from Cape Henlopen and Smyrna. The boys’ race headed out into the woods, and two minutes later, the girls took off. The faster girls’ runners catch the slower boys, then the finish line officials sort it all out.

The Cape boys’ team held off a challenge from Polytech, winning 22-37 while shutting down Smyrna 15-48. Polytech beat Smyrna 18-41. 

The Smyrna girls beat Cape 23-33 and Polytech 19-44. Cape beat Polytech 19-42.

Cape’s Ethan Edery, a sophomore, won the boys’ race, tying his personal best time of 16:49. Edery blessed with a miler’s speed, ran a personal best 4:31 mile to close out the spring track season.

“In today’s race, I felt maybe I could have pushed the last mile a little harder, but it’s still early,” Edery said. “There are plenty of big races coming up.” 

The top 28 finishers in the boys’ race all broke 20 minutes. Cape’s top 7 by place and time were Edery; 3. Julian Callaway, 17:32; 4. Ryan Baker, 17:34; 6. Hunter Jones, 17:40; 8. Sam Epstein, 17:44; 9. Ace Howard, 18:06; and 11. Lance Kauffman, 18:08.

The girls’ race saw Smyrna take the first three places with Reagan Sebastianelli, 20:07; Kelly Barr, 20:13; and Sarah Larose, 20:14.  

Cape’s top runners by place and time were 4. Olivia Brozefsky, 20:27; 5. Katie Kuhlman, 20:35; 8. Mia Nuebling, 21:27; 9. Elizabeth Melson, 21:51; 11. Lindsay Rambo, 22:19; 12. Ariana Adili-Khams, 22:27; 16. Taylor Johnson, 23:30; and 17. Caroline Maull, 23:31. 

Cape will host Dover and Milford Wednesday, Oct. 16, before competing in the Joe O’Neill Invitational at Bellevue State Park Friday, Oct. 18.
