Cape comes out flat, survives at Dover 34-24

January 17, 2019

A wrestler who hits the mat flat runs a high risk of ending up flat on his back. The sport requires emotional focus and energy.

Cape escaped Dover 34-24 Jan. 16, but had to wait it out until the match was secured by wins from Billy Ott over Qualeak Bumbrey at 195 (5-2) and Lucas Ruppert in a come-from-behind 8-6 win over James Kilby.

“The win over Smyrna last week and a tournament this weekend had some of our guys flat,” coach Chris Mattioni said. “Dover has some strong kids in their lineup, and if most of them deliver, you can find yourself in trouble.”

Earning decision wins for Cape were Carson Kammerer (120) 7-5 over Marquis Machado, Mikey Frederick (126) 11-7 over Jay-Roan Lopez, Jackson Handlin (160) over Nasir Anderson 11-5, Billy Ott (195) over Qualeak Bumbrey 5-2 and Lucas Ruppert (285) over James Kilby 8-6.

Winning by pin were Anthony Caruso (132) over Jamir Young and Andre Currie (152) over David Moore.

Dover wins came from Richard Fonticiella (138) over Finbar Rishko 4-3, Justice Hefley (145) over Daniel Saez 3-2, Gabe Evan (170) over Roy Jones 9-2, Sam Akrwoille (182) over Chris Handlin 8-4 and Hugo Harp (220) over Cameron Smith by fall.

Cape will compete in the Grapple at the Brook Invitational at Springbrook High in Maryland this weekend Jan. 18-19, then wrestle at Sussex Tech (2-2) on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
