Cape football begins year 50 with fewer than 60 players

Players are limited to four quarters of football per week

Cape football begins its 50th year with fewer than 60 players in camp and just 10 upperclassmen.

“I’m not sure how that happened here,” said second-year Coach J.D. Maull from the practice field on day one. “Our younger players will be getting lots of game experience.”

Cape will scrimmage at Lake Forest at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 17. The Spartans are coming off a 6-4 season, having lost to Division II state tournament teams Delmar, Woodbridge, A.I. du Pont and Wilmington Friends.

“Lake is a good football team coached by Fred Johnson. They will be a good test for us,” Maull said.

Cape will have a pair of inexperienced sophomores at quarterback in Hank D’Ambrogi and Merek Harrigan-Ferro.

“Hank has all the leadership skills, and he’s the lacrosse kid who can read on the run,” Maull said. “Merek is our Jim McMahon. He comes to practice in a Meineke shirt and can play any position, and you can’t rattle him or scare him.”

The Vikings have a trio of freshmen quarterbacks including Joe Coveleski, Maddox Gipko and Keishawn Mansfield.

“There have been some great football teams here at Cape,” Maull said. “The X factor in football is hitting. Those are the athletes we’ll be looking for in the preseason.”

Cape will open the season Friday, Sept. 6, hosting the Hawks of St. Georges Tech.
