Cape football defeats Caravel 32-21 on Senior Day

Vikings honor Jack McPike with 11-point victory
November 21, 2020

It was a high-powered, smash-mouth, emotional game between the Vikings and Bucs Nov. 21, but at the final horn, Cape had taken a 32-21 victory over Caravel.

The Cape football squad dedicated its 11-point win over the Bucs to former Cape quarterback No. 11 Jack McPike, who recently died following a long battle with a brain tumor.

“That W was for you, Jack McPike,” said an emotional Vikings head coach J.D. Maull. “We won by 11, and that’s something very special.”

Cape also celebrated the Class of 2021 with senior Jaden Davis rushing 33 times for 168 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. He also pulled in a pass for 27 yards.

Senior Isaiah Fillyau powered in for a touchdown. Senior placekicker Austin Carey booted a 40-yard field goal and three extra points.

The underclassmen also contributed to the scoring, as junior Jordan Baines rushed six times for 28 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Hank D’Ambrogi went 5-for-14 for 86 yards.

Vikings senior Kurtis Wells pulled in two passes for 47 yards. Ja'Vaughn Burton caught two passes for 12 yards.

The first quarter ended tied at seven. The Bucs scored twice in the second quarter with Cape booting a field goal to make the score at halftime 21-10. The second half belonged to the Vikings, as they put up 22 points to end the game with a 32-21 win.

“We didn’t put our head down in the second half,” said Maull. “We battled back and played hard. We’re having fun. We’ve got two more games and hopefully another couple of weeks after that. Caesar Rodney is big, and we’re looking for a good game.”

Cape will welcome the Riders to Legends Stadium Friday, Nov. 27. Game time is 1 p.m.
