Cape football grounded by the Eagles

Vikings’ Davis rushes for 136 yards

On a damp, cold night at Legends Stadium, the Cape football team ran into a hot Smyrna squad, falling 54-13 to drop to 0-2 on the season.

The Eagles started off quickly, moving down the field and scoring within the first minute of play. But the Vikings came back with a promising drive of their own, finishing with quarterback Hank D’Ambrogi hitting Jordan Baines in the back of the end zone. After a failed two-point try, the Vikings were down 8-6. The Eagles then ran off 30 straight points before the Vikings would hit pay dirt again on a Jaden Davis reception.

Cape had 258 yards of total offense. Davis rushed for 136 yards on 24 carries. He also caught three passes for 46 yards. D’Ambrogi threw eight completions for 86 yards and two scores. Baines grabbed two passes for 23 yards. Kurtis Wells pulled in a pass for 14 yards.

Chancler Johnson ran back four kicks for 88 yards.

“Our offensive line did well,” said Cape head coach J.D. Maull. “We don’t have any seniors on the o-line, and we got tired out a little in the fourth quarter. We had a couple of opportunities inside the 10-yard line, but couldn’t punch it in.

“We are throwing the ball; we’re just not catching it. The team also has to play better defensively. We had 40 missed tackles in the game.”

Maull pointed out the positive play by younger players, especially Keishawn Mansfield and Jack Schell.

“Keishawn deflected two passes,” said Maull. “Jack also played well defensively when he was put into the game.”

“We are able to move the ball really well against the best of the best,” Davis said. “I believe for the rest of the season we have a really good chance to win out, but to do this, the seniors and captains such as myself have to step up and push the team to a whole new level.”

Smyrna quarterback Aidan Sanchez threw for six touchdowns in the game. He has thrown 10 TD passes in two games.

The Vikings will travel to Milford Friday, Nov. 6, for a game against the Bucs. Cape defeated Milford 28-14 last season.

“We have to go into the game with Milford and take care of business,” Maull said.
