Gazette reader Gary Conte of Long Neck participated in University of Delaware’s Study Abroad program at John Cabot University in Trastevere, Rome, from the end of August to mid‑December. During his four‑month stay, he studied Italian, ancient Roman literature, and ancient Roman monuments. One of the monuments his class visited was the Pantheon temple in Rome. The Pantheon is an ancient Roman temple built by Marcus Agrippa for Augustus Caesar and later rebuilt by the Emperor Hadrian. It houses the remains of the Renaissance painter Raphael and the first two Italian kings of unified Italy. The temple is renowned for its massive concrete dome, a testament to engineering ingenuity that inspired Brunelleschi’s octagonal dome in the Florence Cathedral and the dome of the U.S. Capitol.
