Cape girls’ basketball scores a 47-41 win over Tech
The Cape girls’ basketball freshmen Dynamic Duo of Mehkia Applewhite and Morgan Mahoney scored a combined 29 points to lead the Vikings to a 47-41 win over Sussex Tech Jan. 2.
Applewhite dropped 17 on the Ravens, while Mahoney added 14.
The Vikings started off the new year in the hole, going down seven in the first three minutes of the game before the Vikings’ Applewhite hit a layup. Tech went ahead 11-6 at the end of the first quarter.
“Our conversation with the team was, ‘Let’s remember not to have the whole winter off,’” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “It looks different ways. We’re not quick to the ball. We weren’t quick on close outs. We weren’t quick to loose balls. We need to get back the intensity that we had in the Padua game. We just need to get that again.”
The Vikings defeated the Pandas 57-51 Dec. 20 at Cape.
The Ravens took a two-point 22-20 lead into the halftime break. Then the Vikings outscored the Tech squad 27-18 in the second half to put the Ravens on ice.
“I felt on tonight,” said Applewhite.”I’ve been waiting for a game like this. I know I’m capable of it and haven’t been able until now.”
Applewhite also snagged six rebounds in the game. She shot 47 percent from the field and hit 3-of-5 three-pointers.
The other half of the freshmen duo, Mahoney, picked up a double-double in the game, scoring 14 and grabbing 10 rebounds.
“I felt that we needed to get up and work as a team,” said Mahoney. “So I wanted to help and start making my shots.”
“Holy cow, the freshmen can play,” said Woods. “Once they know it and they own it, wow. You could see their basketball IQ down the stretch. Once they know when to go and when not to go, I mean, they can play.”
The first-year head coach also had accolades for their forward transfer Carlin Quinn.
“She was big time,” smiled Woods. “Quinn was boarding.”
Quinn grabbed five rebounds and had two blocks in her minutes on the hardwood, while dishing off two assists.
Point guard Dania Cannon scored eight points, including clutch free throws in the last minute of play.
Lexi Watkins added six points, including two threes in a row to tie the game during Cape’s run in the third quarter. Her play took the Ravens out of their triangle-and-two and forced them to go straight man-to-man.
“I’m really glad I made the shots,” said the Vikings senior. “It felt great. We came out kinda slow, but after we got going, we seem to pick it up.”
Senior Airelle Parker led the Ravens with 16, while senior Camille Scott chipped in 10.
The Vikings JV defeated the Ravens JV 19-13. Jhayden Holloman scored six, while Kelly Bragg had five. Elizabeth Rishko and Lauryn Head tallied four each.
The Vikings travel to Appoquinimink on Friday, Jan. 4.
