Cape girls’ basketball sinks Lake Forest

Tough defense powers Vikings to victory
February 7, 2019

Junior transfer Carlin Quinn pulled down 17 rebounds and sank eight points to lead the Vikings to a 61-29 win over Lake Forest Feb. 5 in Felton. Abbey Hearn scored 17 points and snagged eight rebounds and Dania Cannon put 13 points in the book.

“We were just hustling back and forth and getting back on defense,” said Quinn, who had a career night on the hardwood. “It really helped that we’ve been working a lot on defense lately. I just think every single time, I have to get the rebound.”

“I feel we need to just stay calm under pressure on the court,” said Cannon. “I feel we can win the games we need to.”

Cape jumped out to a 23-13 first quarter lead and continued the pressure to go into the halftime break up 34-17. The second half was more of the offensive show of the first half, as the Lady Vikings outscored the Spartans 27-12 to finish off the home squad.

The Vikings shot 43 percent from the field and scored 20 points off of Lake turnovers. They out rebounded the Spartans 38-28.

Mehkia Applewhite added eight points for the Vikings. Morgan Mahoney scored five, while Nya Mosley and Lexi Watkins pitched in four each. Ryleigh Elliott also knocked down a basket.

“I told the team we wanted to win the rebounding battle, the turnover battle and we want to shoot better than they do,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “Everything starts and ends with defense with us. We’ve got athletes, man. They can lock up. Go in, get your space and own your space.”

The Cape junior varsity remain undefeated after their 54-12 win over the JV Spartans. Destiny Kusen and Mackenzie Vitolo scored 10 points each to lead the Vikings.

The 13-3 Vikings host the 13-3 Sussex Tech Ravens Friday, Feb. 8.
