Cape girls’ basketball wins shootout with Ravens
A 23-3 second-half run lifted Cape to a 48-32 victory over Sussex Tech Feb. 8 at Cape Henlopen High School.
Freshman Morgan Mahoney shot 67 percent from the field to lead the Vikings with 14 points. Mehkia Applewhite added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Nya Mosley also grabbed eight rebounds and Dania Cannon dished off seven assists.
“Once I drove I knew I was scoring,” Mahoney said. “I was making my shots today. I felt like we were executing our plays and we were rebounding and making good decisions. Every time we drove, they would just foul, so we knew just to drive and go to the basket and score.”
“We addressed every single thing they were going to do,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “It was just a matter of executing and trusting each other. Being down early is kinda like our thing, so we won’t panic anymore. I told them if we rebound and defend, everything else will come. Once we start moving that ball, we’re really hard to defend. Everybody contributed tonight.”
“I put a little bit too much pressure on my scoring in the past few games,” said junior Abbey Hearn. “Once Mehkia [Applewhite] and Morgan started hitting, it took a lot of pressure off me and Dania. We were able to pass it up. It’s really fun being able to trust your teammates to knock it down. It’s so much fun to watch your teammates score.”
The Viking junior varsity team remained undefeated at 15-0.
Jhayden Hollomon led the Vikings with 13 points. Ella Rishko added 10, while Lauryn Head tallied five, Kelly Bragg and Destiny Kusen hit for four points and Taonshaye Trader hit a basket.
The Vikings hosts the 7-7 Senators of Dover Tuesday, Feb. 12.
