Cape girls’ lacrosse doesn’t reload, they reconfigure

Vikings set to defend 10 in quest for another state championship
March 9, 2018

Cape girls’ lacrosse is a program that doesn’t reload, they just reconfigure.

The Vikings have won nine straight state championships going back to 2009, and they haven’t lost to a Delaware team in more than 100 games. The girls have learned to walk the walk, but leave the talking for others. The streak is improbable and can’t last. Some team out there is going to drop Cape someday, which is why the Vikings have always scheduled formidable foes from out of state.

Last season, the first after eight straight titles under Zen Master P.J. Kesmodel, Cape head coach Lindsay Eichner went out on maternity leave, and Jen Burkhart and Leigh Rupar ran the team. Bruce Leibu coached the goalies and Deb Windett ran the junior varsity team.

Eichner returned just prior to the state tournament, and the Vikings went on to win their ninth title in a row.

Gone from that team are Player of the Year Eddy Shoop and Division I-level players Cailey Thornburg, Izzy Cryne, Katie Klabe, Korrine Lemaire, Sarah Hyde and Sarah Rambo. Chloe Schaeffer, a two-year starter, is out for the year after ankle surgery.

“We lost great players, and all quality players, but Cape is a step-up and step-in program,” coach Eichner said. “There are players who have been waiting for their chance.”

Cape will begin the scrimmage season with a play day at DE Turf Saturday, March 10, playing Mt. Hebron and Georgetown Visitation, both powerhouse programs.
