Cape girls’ lacrosse rocks steady at Icebreaker Play Day
A total of 28 teams each played at least three games, using six different fields over six hours in the March 10 Women’s Lacrosse Icebreaker Play Day at DE Turf in Frederica.
For the most part, games were 25 minutes. Cape, though, was in a bracket versus Maryland schools Mt. Hebron and Oakdale, and played two full scrimmages with a pair of 25-minute halves against both powerhouse programs. Georgetown Visitation was a late-Friday cancellation, so their place was taken by Cape’s JV team. The schedule was reconfigured, with Cape’s JV team playing against three Delaware varsity teams.
“We’ve had a little over a week of practice, so many teams thought they weren’t ready to play games and some were missing players taking the SATs, but that’s preseason lacrosse,” said Cape coach Lindsay Eichner. “Playing some of the Maryland schools that start earlier, there’s always the chance you can step on the field and get rocked.”
Cape lost a host of top players off last year’s state championship team, but the talent pool is deep for Cape lacrosse with a blend of returning experience along with younger athletes comfortable with stepping up. Cape goalies Vienna Iacona and Vivian Lynn each looked sharp in the scrimmages. Iacona was between the pipes versus Mt. Hebron, while Lynn guarded the cage versus Oakdale.
“They are both fearless stopping the ball and clearing it,” Eichner said. “We are fortunate to have such depth at goalie replacing Izzy Cryne, who is now playing at Mercer University.”
Cape kept a scorebook at the scoring table and beat Mt. Hebron 9-5 and outlasted Oakdale 7-5.
“We substituted freely, and mixed and matched the lineup for both scrimmages,” Eichner said. “We will learn a lot more in practices and from the Mid-Atlantic Play Day on Saturday.”
The eight-team Mid-Atlantic Lacrosse Play Day is set from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 17, with each team playing three 40-minute games. Cape and Queen Anne’s will represent the Delmarva Peninsula along with nationally ranked No. 2 Notre Dame Prep, No. 3 Glenelg High School, No. 5 St. Stephen & St. Agnes High School, No. 14 Archbishop John Carroll, No. 19 Summit High School and Maryland 4A State Champion Bel Air High School.
