Cape girls’ soccer looks to make state tournament again

Goalie Lucy Siranides expected back after five games
March 8, 2019

Coaches are good at demonstrating technique without actually moving, like playing an air guitar in front of a mirror.

Soccer coach Patrick Kilby is entering his 13th season, the last four with Cape. He slipped on the saturated Bermuda grass March 4 and went down, splattering droplets on everyone’s shins. The players found the pratfall quite humorous. Assistant coach Gary Montalto whispered, “I have to admit I got a little chuckle out of it myself.”

The Cape girls made the tournament last season for the first time in 14 years.

“We look to make it again this year,” Kilby said.

Madison Nichols will get the start in goal until Lucy Siranides is fully cleared in a month. Lucy is recovering nicely from ACL surgery.

Cape lost Colleen Donohoe, Hannah Bieler, Haley Schnupp and Brayden Fannin to graduation.

The Vikings return the nucleus of the 2018 team that finished 8-4-1.

Soccer will host an eight-team scrimmage play day beginning at 3 p.m., Friday, March 8.

Note: Coach Kilby was in the Beebe Emergency Room March 5 for a painful sprained shoulder. “The doc smiled and said, ‘I heard you fell on the field,’” Kilby said.
