Cape girls’ soccer prepares for 2023 season

March 20, 2023

The Cape girls’ soccer squad looks to improve on its 2022 campaign of 7-7-1 with senior leadership from veterans Morgan Schubert, Laurelee Mobius, Harlee Graulich, Colleen Flynn and Sophie Zych.

Holding down the defense will be Graulich, Mobius and sophomore Makala VanDrunen. The defensive midfield will be juniors Shannon Rath and Sara Kilby. Key players in the attacking end will be juniors Cadence McMahon and Ava Dolan with seniors Colleen Flynn and Sophie Zych. Players who will also make an impact are Schubert, junior Emily Cook, and freshmen Ava Brown and Kiersten Smith.

“We expect to be super competitive,” said coach Patrick Kilby. “We have grown quite a bit since last season. We are carrying our largest roster since I have been at Cape, 23 players. We expect a lot of competition throughout that roster for starting roles in the top 11, as well as important reserve minutes. We are carrying 11 juniors, who have for the most part been playing together in a club setting for multiple years. Our new additions Schubert, Cook, Brown and Smith will contribute right away, as they come with extensive experience outside of the high school setting. We have long-range goals of earning a tournament berth, something that has eluded us the past two seasons. We are putting a strong emphasis on team chemistry and sisterhood, also something that has been subpar in recent years. We are off to a great start. We have shown well in both preseason events – our home play day on March 4 and our trip to Virginia Beach on March 9.”

The Vikings will open the regular season Thursday, March 23, at home against Laurel.
