Cape girls’ swimming ready to return to podium

Cape seniors hopeful for another meet title
December 31, 2020

Cape swimming head coach Bill Geppert is excited about seeing his girls’ squad fight this season to bring a Henlopen Conference title back to Cape. They lost the conference meet by just two points in February 2020 after winning seven straight years. There are 25 girls out for the 2020-21 squad.

“It has been a strange season so far,” said Geppert, who’s entering his 23rd season as coach. “We were so fortunate that the Sussex Consortium pool had come available for us to practice. A lot of other high schools have to practice at other venues instead of their own. Our home meets are at Sussex Academy this season. They have been very gracious to allow us to compete there. We encourage our club swimmers to continue to swim for their club. It spreads us out a little, but it allows us to work with our other swimmers here at the consortium. Our season doesn’t start until Jan. 11, and we’re going to try to squeeze 10 conference meets in and we also have Sanford coming down to swim us.”

Seniors back to lead the team are Amaya and Aya Daisey, Lindsay Rambo, Erin Morrissey, Julie Heffernan and Melanie Fritchman.

“I am very hopeful that this team can get another conference meet title,” Rambo said. “We’ve got a lot of good new additions to our team that will only help us. As a whole, the team is very hardworking, and I expect lots of great times to come from this season. After such a good ending to my cross country season, I’m so excited to help have another great season with another team I love.”

The Vikings have some quality freshmen and sophomores who will score points for the 2020 squad.

Anna Sullivan, a freshman who moved here from Severna Park, Md., will add depth to the sprint events.

“I’m real impressed by the way the swimmers have treated the facility and handled the situation following the safety protocols,” said Geppert.

The consortium pool is equipped with an ultraviolet sensor that sanitizes the pool water before returning it to the pool.

Cape will open its season Friday, Jan. 15, against Polytech at the Sussex Academy pool.
