Lady Vikings look to conference championship
February 25, 2021

Strong defense and balanced scoring moved the Cape girls’ basketball team past a scrappy Senators squad 52-28 Feb. 22 at Dover High to stay undefeated at 13-0.

Cape scored 12, 14, 12, 14 in their four-quarter victory.

Mehkia Applewhite led the Vikings with 15 points, including four three-pointers, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Morgan Mahoney tallied 14 points, including two threes, seven rebounds and six blocks. Ella Rishko hit for 13 points, seven steals, five rebounds and three assists. Julia Saleur scored eight points, one three, five rebounds and three assists.

Lauryn Head and Destiny Kusen lit up under the basket with seven and six rebounds, respectively.

“The game sort of got more aggressive, and I got amped up by everybody,” said Head, who also dished off four assists. “It just got me going.”

“We got in a little foul trouble, so coach mixed us up to see who was going to play well together,” said Applewhite. “We always take a minute to get warmed up, and the Dover crowd pumped me up by cheering against me.”

When Cape coach Pat Woods was asked what he thought of the game, he replied, “I’m glad we won the game.”

Ava Zerrod led the Senators with 13 points.

The Lady Vikings will face Woodbridge for the Henlopen Conference crown Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Dover High School gymnasium.

“Our focus is staying true to who we are,” Woods said. “Play hard, play together and stay locked in.”
