Vikings face American Heritage Dec. 14
December 12, 2019

The Cape versus Sussex Tech girls’ basketball game started out with a score of 6-6 in the first three minutes of play, but from there the Lady Vikings turned on the afterburners and went on a 33-6 run before halftime. They finished with a 76-19 victory.

The Lady Vikings are 2-1 on the young season, while Tech moves to 1-2.

Sophomore Mehkia Applewhite led all scorers with 18 points. She garnered five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Senior Dania Cannon tallied 17 while dishing off four, grabbing four rebounds and snatching five steals. Senior Abbey Hearn scored a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also smacked away two Tech shot attempts. Carlin Quinn put 10 points in the book while snagging six rebounds and five blocked shots.

“I think that our practices have been great and really helping us,“ said Quinn. “We’ve been working hard and pushing ourselves more and more. We communicated very well tonight.”

“Coach wants us to play more disciplined,” said Applewhite. “He wants us to execute and not just keep running and taking lay-ups. We have to play a more disciplined game Saturday against American Heritage.”

The Vikings had just one three-point shot in the contest.

“We’re really good when we’re attacking the basket,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “It’s a balance. I want them to feel confident in their shots, but frankly they haven’t earned the right to shoot threes in the game.”

Cape was shooting just 12 percent from behind the three-point line in the first few games.

“Our staff has made a concerted effort to let them figure things out themselves,” said Woods. “For example, we need to learn the difference between good defense and just getting steals. It’s not always the same thing. Even if you don’t get a steal, you can play great defense by disrupting the opponent’s offense. Offensively, just getting an open look isn’t always as good as getting a layup. We are learning to give up good shots for great shots. Keep working until we get want we want. In practice, they must figure out rotations, defensive assignments, positions with various lineups. Decision making makes them better. Coaches just have to be patient.”

The Vikings junior varsity took a 50-12 win over the JV Ravens. Ja’Onna Lee led the JV Vikings with 15 points. Akira Perry hit for 11, while Dianna Naumann scored 10.

Cape was set to travel to Caesar Rodney Thursday, Dec. 12.
