December 3, 2018

Pat Woods, the newly installed head coach of Cape girls’ basketball, celebrated his 36th birthday Nov. 30 with an impressive 79-56 opening night win over visiting Smyrna.

Cape fans filled the one-side-fits-all pulled-out bleachers sensing that something was up with the new edition of Cape girls’ basketball.

“We have several players who are used to the game running through them and are used to taking most of the shots,” Woods said. “But the key to success for us is sharing the basketball and making it natural. We played a very unselfish game tonight.”

Cape’s five starters all scored in double figures, paced by Abby Hearn with 16, Dania Cannon with 13, Morgan Mahoney with 13, Mehkia Applewhite 12 and Lexi Watkins with 11.

The Vikings led 29-8 at the end of the first quarter, wowing the crowd with extra passes and long-range jump shooting. The last three quarters it was Coast Day on the court, mixing and matching lineups to give the roster a chance to show the fans what they can do.

Cape drained eight three-pointers led Mahoney with three, Applewhite with two and Cannon, Ryleigh Elliott and La’keyisha Saintervil with one each.

Smyrna’s Jayla Smith connected on five three-pointers to lead the Eagles with 21 points. Marqueisha Bennett chipped in with 15 points.

Cape won the JV game 44-3 with just six players in uniform. Lauryn Head led the charge with 10 points. She was followed by Ella Rishko and Jhayden Holloman nine and Kelly Bragg and Destiny Kusen with eight each.

The varsity girls play at Sussex Central at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4. The Golden Knights opened the season with an impressive 49-28 win over Caesar Rodney. They were paced by Ambria Stratton with 13, Raeonna Stratton with 12 and Tameeyah Bowden with 10.
