Boys’ team falls by two points
January 17, 2020

It was standing room only at the Sussex Family YMCA Jan. 16, as the Cape girls’ team swam to a 96-74 victory over Sussex Tech, while the Ravens boys’ squad squeaked out a two-point 86-84 win.

The Cape girls move to 6-1, while the boys’ team drops to 5-2. Sussex Tech’s girls are 5-3, and the boys move to 6-2.

“It was a really intense meet,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “Having quality meets like this one or with CR, even though we may get a loss out of it, makes us better when it comes to the conference meet. It’s fun to be part of them.”

The boys’ meet came down to the last event, the 400 free relay, with both teams tied at 78. The Tech team of Jodi Johnson, Saracen Lunn, Evan Davis and Nathan Venables took first with a time of 3:48.59 and picked up the valuable eight first-place points. The Vikings squad took second and third, garnering four and two points, respectively.

Cape’s girls’ team took first in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 free and 200 free relay. Tech took top finishes in the 200 free, 500 free, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay.

The Tech boys took first place in the 200 medley relay, 200 free, 200 individual medley, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Cape won the 500 free, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.

“We are always happy to swim our rival Cape as we know the kids will step up and race to best times,” said Tech coach Michele Thomas. “Tonight’s meet was no different, we saw great races and many of our kids swam their season best times. We are looking forward to swimming IR this week and finishing up with Lake Forest as we start to develop our tune up for the Conference Championships.”

Cape will travel to the Pocomoke YMCA Tuesday, Jan. 21, to face Stephen Decatur. Tech will host Indian River Thursday, Jan. 23, at Sussex Academy.
