Vikings face Woodbridge for second time in a week
March 4, 2021

The Cape girls’ basketball train continues to roll with a 68-25 blowout of St. Georges March 3 in the second round of the DIAA state tournament.

It was the M&M show, as Mehkia Applewhite and Morgan Mahoney lit up the scoreboard with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Applewhite hit four threes, while Mahoney dropped two. They also combined for nine rebounds, six blocks, six steals and five assists.

“Morgan and Mehkia are best friends,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “They have grown together and they feed off each other. They continue to grow as players and leaders for our team.”

Julia Saleur finished with nine points, six assists and three rebounds, while Lauryn Head tallied seven points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Saleur, Head and Mackenzie Vitolo each had one three-pointer. Ella Rishko snagged four rebounds, five points, four assists and two steals.

“This game really helped us,” Rishko said. “We worked on a lot of different and new things that we needed practice on to meet Woodbridge again. For me, it’s more of a staying healthy for the next game by keeping hydrated. In the conference championship, I was exhausted because of that.”

The Vikings’ lone healthy senior, Destiny Kusen, continues to be a beast under the boards, snagging eight rebounds and blocking two Hawks shot attempts.

“We turned the ball over a lot in the conference championship with Woodbridge,” Head said. “We worked on that tonight, and we played really well together.”

Sophomore Ella Richardson led the Hawks with seven points.

Cape took a 37-11 lead into the halftime break, substituting freely with the Vikings’ deep bench. The second half was a clone of the first, with the Vikings handling the Hawks’ zone 31-14 to garner the 43-point running clock victory.

“This game is going to help us 100 percent for the next game,” Woods said. “I think we needed to get back to the way we were on defense. Overall, I just want us to play free. The first time we faced Woodbridge, we were timid and hesitant. It was our first big game this year. They are skilled. I think we are going to do our thing, to play to win and play hard, rather than playing not to make a mistake. That’s what I’m expecting.”

The Vikings host the Raiders Friday, March 5.

Delmarva Christian wins big

The Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball team opened the state tournament with a dominating 55-21 win over higher-seeded William Penn. It was the first state tournament win in school history.

The Royals were led by Gracie Fetterman, who tallied 26 points, four assists, four steals and two rebounds. Ainsley Bell contributed 15 points, five assists, five steals, three rebounds and two blocks.

Delmarva Christian faces a tough test Friday, March 5, when the Royals take on No. 2 Conrad.
