Sloan Pierce finds some space. The Cape girls’ lacrosse team ran the clock on Archmere en route to a 19-9 win April 18.
The Vikings first ran the clock when they went up 13-3 at the half. But the Auks broke back with four unanswered goals to close the gap to 13-7. Cape responded with a 6-2 run to restart the running clock for the rest of the game.
“Archmere is extremely well coached and made great adjustments throughout the game,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood.
The Vikings, playing through a front-loaded schedule, improve to 5-2 on the season with upcoming games at Easton (Md.) Monday, April 20, and Indian River Wednesday, April 23.
Ally Diehl passed a milestone with 200 career draw controls won.
Lefty-loosey took the lid off the Cape offense, as southpaws Haley Gamuciello (five) and Mairead Rishko (two) accounted for seven goals. Rishko also assisted on two of Gamuciello’s goals.
Underwood said of her two lefties: “Mairead is getting better each day after a tough start. It’s great to see. Her field vision and tenacity are definitely something we want on the field. Haley has had a great start to the season. Can’t wait to see how she progresses.”
Claire Lopez had an efficient game with five goals and two assists, while Ally Diehl contributed four goals. Mackenzie Todd had a goal and four assists.
Jordan Murray and Emily Wells shared goaltending duties, with each keeper recording a save.
Scoring for Archmere were Anne Deluca and Giada Gioedano with three each, Elizabeth DeLuca with two and Claudia Koch with one.
Archmere assists were Sarah Dahms with one, and Breanne Hughes, Koch and Elizabeth DeLuca with one each.
Goalie Mia Luce was credited with five saves.
Notes: The Cape JV team defeated Archmere 11-3 to bring its record to 6-0 on the season. Tower Hill (6-0) is Delaware’s only undefeated team. One-loss teams include Padua at 6-1, Tatnall at 5-1 and Ursuline at 3-1. None of those teams have Cape on the regular-season schedule. Beacon Middle school will play at Fred Thomas Tuesday, April 21, in a battle of unbeaten teams. The unbeaten boys from Beacon and Fred Thomas will also play at Fred Thomas this Tuesday.
