Cape girls run to 50-point halftime lead over Smyrna

Six Henlopen schools have dropped JV girls’ basketball
January 20, 2020

Hang around town and sports will smack you down. Eventually it happens to mostly everyone, although some escape.

The Cape girls’ basketball team came out of the Big House Barn Jan. 17, scoring 43 unanswered points on Smyrna. The score at halftime was 53-3.

The final score was 79-13. Cape called off the dogs and throttled back at the half. Abbey Hearn (26 points) and Dania Cannon (18 points) scored all their points in the first half.

If the game story were filed at Browseabout Books, it would be in the mystery section. Sociology and demography may help explain the slow and steady demise of Henlopen Conference girls’ basketball.

Six Henlopen Conference schools have dropped junior varsity girls’ basketball, including Polytech and Smyrna in the Northern Division.

Polytech won the state championship in 2003, while Smyrna was in the finals in 2010.

Southern Division schools Indian River, Delmar, Laurel and Seaford have their JV programs too. Seaford reached the finals in 2003 and 2004.

All of this can be analyzed six ways from Sunday, but the bottom line is players have to put the ball in the basket to score points.

Cape improves to 9-3 on the season. The Vikings’ next two games are on the road at Milford and Sussex Tech.

“We play Conrad (9-2) here Jan. 31, and they will run right through us if we don’t work to get better,” said coach Pat Woods. “The problem is we haven’t been able to simulate what they do.”

Conrad lost in last year’s semifinals to Sanford 52-41.
