Cape girls’ lacrosse enjoys a summer senior night

Senior join storied alumni and a game is played
August 4, 2020

Cape girls’ lacrosse celebrated seven girls on a delayed Senior Night July 30 ahead of an alumni game in which those seven went to the far side and officially became alumni.

Anna Stancofski, Delaney Zolper, Sawyer Walker, Lola Messick and Lee Lee Wilson and their families were on hand for the ceremony. Meredith Lockwood and Talbot Buck were unable to attend.

“We just wanted to be able to do something for our seniors to put smiles on their faces,” said coach Lindsey Eichner Underwood. “I know how much they wanted to get No. 12 in a row, and to be shut down for the spring was just so disappointing for them.”

The seven are all going on to college: Stancofski to Swarthmore, Zolper to Ole Miss, Walker to Winthrop, Messick to Mary Washington, Lockwood to Vermont and Buck to East Carolina University.

The alumni teams consisted of Anna Frederick (Temple), Lexi Woodruff (Delaware), Caroline Judge (Northeastern), Maura Johnson (Delaware), Kat Judge (Winthrop), Annie Judge (Temple), Lindsay Monigle (West Chester), Mallory Jones (Penn State) and Sam Broadhurst (Delaware). Arriving late for the alumni team were Chloe Schaeffer (Mercer) and Alia Marshall (Northwestern).

The teams played 25-minute halves with a running clock, and although the alumni team was filled with legendary players from lacrosse and field hockey, the current Cape team held its own, which showed promise for an uncertain future.

Many family and friends went up into the stands to watch the teams play. All seemed normal except talk along the fence got around to the pandemic and what is likely to happen next. Some guesses seemed better than others. The only certainty is that the student-athletes on the field will not be derailed.
