Cape High’s Champions Stadium receiving new turf field

December 1, 2021

Work was underway at Cape High’s Champions Stadium the week before Thanksgiving to replace the turf field after more than 10 years of heavy use.

Supervisor of Facilities Cheyenne Rivera said the total cost of the project is just over $444,000 and is part of the normal turf field replacement schedule based on expected longevity and normal usage of the field over the years.

“The project is set to be finished in late December 2021 to early January 2022, and [we’re] looking forward to our Cape athletes playing on the new turf in the spring 2022,” Rivera said.

Local funds will cover the cost of the project, Cape spokesperson Steph DeMalto said.

Champions Stadium has proven to be an apropos name representing many athletes who call the field home. In November, the Cape High field hockey team earned its fifth straight Division I state title and 10th championship in the last 11 seasons. In May, the Cape High girls’ lacrosse team earned its 12th straight state championship.

In 2020, Legends Stadium received a new turf field, replacing one that was installed in the 2008-09 school year. The $382,000 project included netting behind the goal posts on each endline, a comber and other equipment needed to maintain the field.
