Cape High freshman math league named best in county

Annual state competition now canceled
March 20, 2020

Cape High’s ninth-grade math league team earned best in county honors and would have represented Sussex in state competition April 21 in Dover, but the competition has been canceled due to coronavirus concerns.

The freshman team analyzed and answered its way through algebra and geometry problems, puzzles and brain-twisters, in a culmination of a four-month-long contest of the Delaware Secondary School Mathematics League, besting freshman teams from Sussex Central, Indian River, Sussex Tech, Milford and Delmar.

Cape High math teacher and league advisor Travis Wharton said the monthly competitions build on students’ in-class learning.

“But, they are given different questions that are outside the traditional curriculum,” he said. “It’s hard to prepare for.”
