Cape Henlopen High School has launched Sussex County’s first Junior Optimist Club.

Sponsored by the Optimist Club of Sussex County, the Junior Club has more than 50 student members. Cape High medical assistant health career pathway instructor Linda Sapienza is club advisor.

“The adult society approached the school about a scholarship essay contest,” she said. “I encouraged students to enter the contest, and decided to form a student Optimist Club.”

The youth component of Optimist International, Junior Optimist Clubs have more than 15,000 students in over 500 clubs throughout the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. The club promotes a positive self-image and healthy relationships.

Cape’s Junior Optimists will concentrate on enhancing school morale as their first project. After building awareness of the club, students plan to develop a community outreach program to benefit the area’s homeless population.

“They’re spreading the word of optimism,” Sapienza said.
