Cape High morning show named best in the Northeast

Students head to national competition in Seattle

Cape High’s student-produced morning announcement TV show beat out teams from 14 states to earn a broadcast excellence award for the Northeast’s top daily taped show.

The student broadcast team heads to Seattle, Wash., March 28 to compete for national honors against teams representing the country’s Southeast, Southwest and Western regions in the Student Television Network’s annual convention.

Cape High video production teacher Bruce Leibu said students entered the competition last year, and incorporated feedback, such as improving lighting and using a teleprompter, into this year’s production.

Leibu said the five-minute show, Cape Report, is 100 percent student-run, except for the small part he plays uploading the final segment to the show’s YouTube channel, CHHS Cape TV. “They do everything,” he said. “It’s professional, yet relaxed, and provides information with humor. And, the students are learning real-world operations and the ability to work in a group.”

Students produce the show the day before it airs. Leibu said anchor Dylan Baldwin reviews the script, makes any corrections and edits copy to be student-friendly. The team records during homeroom and incorporates other recorded segments such as interviews or montages celebrating student achievements.

Because students use the same professional-quality equipment TV studios do, Leibu said, they can go right to work at WBOC or WRDE after graduation.

Dylan, who plans to study broadcasting at Kutztown University, agreed. “I already visited Kutztown, and they use the same equipment we use here,” he said.
