Cape High to present ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’ Nov. 15-18

November 13, 2018

The Cape Henlopen High School theatre group will present Neil Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs” as its fall production. Shows will take place at 7 p.m., Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 15 to 17, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Cape Henlopen High School auditorium.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” is the Tony-Award winning first installment of Neil Simon’s trilogy and was first produced in 1983. The play paints the picture of a 15-year-old boy, Eugene Jerome, living in 1937 with his family in lower-middle-class Brooklyn. As the central character of the play, Eugene spends his days dreaming of baseball and girls, but must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn.

Throughout the play, he makes witty observations about life and the need for family as he interacts with his passionate and quirky Polish-Jewish relatives.

“This has been a fun production to work on with the students,” said Sadie Andros, Cape theatre teacher. “They’ve worked really hard and have truly embraced their characters. I’m looking forward to sharing this production with the students, families and community members.”

Neil Simon was one of Broadway’s most successful comedic writers and earned numerous awards throughout his career, including a Pulitzer Prize for his play “Lost in Yonkers.” Simon passed away Aug. 26 at the age of 91.

“We’re so grateful to have this opportunity to present the story of Simon’s childhood,” said Andros.“It’s a wonderful way for us to pay tribute to the numerous contributions he made to the theatre during his lifetime.”

Tickets for “Brighton Beach Memoirs” can be purchased at the door and are $10 for adults and $5 for students. All seating is general admission and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the showtime. This show is rated PG-13.
