Despite the challenges COVID-19 has created for students, the Cape High theatre troupe will not let it stop them from doing what they do best ... performing!

The theatre students will present, in person, Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” from Thursday to Sunday, May 13 to 16, outside at Stango Park on Kings Highway in Lewes. Showtime is at 7 p.m., Thursday to Saturday, with an encore performance at 3 p.m. Sunday. Attendees should bring their own blankets and/or beach chairs for the performance. A streaming option will be available for those who do not wish to attend in person.

One of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a story of order and disorder, reality and appearance, love and marriage. It begins with Theseus, the duke of Athens, announcing that he will marry Hippolyta and that great celebrations are at hand. Yet all is not well in Athens, and young Hermia finds herself deeply in love with a man her father forbids her from marrying. She and her love, Lysander, flee the city and travel through the woods to a place where they can be together.

Demetrius, Lysander’s rival and the man Hermia’s father has promised her to, follows them into the woods, hoping to catch up with Hermia before it is too late. Demetrius, too, is pursued by his ex-flame Helena, who desperately hopes to rekindle their relationship. Meanwhile, a troupe of amateur actors also takes to the woods to rehearse their performance for the duke’s wedding. The antics of the feuding Fairy King and his mischievous servant Puck lead to a great deal of chaos and confusion in the woods.

“As always, our students have risen to the occasion and have worked tirelessly to present this play to the public,” said Cape High Theatre Director Sadie Andros. “They’ve had to overcome some unique challenges this year, but their desire and willingness to perform have never wavered. We’re looking forward to sharing their latest performance with our community, and we hope everyone will join us to show their support for our students!”
