Three Cape High seniors were honored April 9 at the annual Secretary of Education Scholars banquet in Dover, where Secretary of Education Susan Bunting recognized 87 top public school students.

“This is an inspiring group of young people,” Bunting said. “Each has academically excelled while also making significant contributions to his or her school and community through volunteer service, school leadership and athletic achievement.”

Macy Beach of Millsboro is a member of Cape High’s Honor Society and Gay-Straight Alliance. She competes all over the country in equestrian eventing, which includes dressage, show jumping and cross country, including the Junior Olympics in Montana last summer.

Macy said she pushes herself to try new things and overcome obstacles.

“If there is one thing competing has taught me, it is that no matter what place I end up, I will be satisfied knowing I tried my best,” she said. Macy will study computer science at the University of Delaware.

Jacqueline Cannon of Rehoboth is Leo Club secretary and a member of the Honor Society and Delaware Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Board. She has been enrolled in Cape’s Academic Challenge program since eighth grade, taking college courses that will transfer into credits at the University of Delaware, where she will study nursing.

A five-time state champion, Jaqueline plays field hockey and lacrosse and said she looks up to her two older sisters for guidance and inspiration.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamt of the things I could potentially achieve by following in their footsteps,” she said. “I will continue to look up to them for guidance as I progress into college.”

Maryann Tietbohl of Milton is president of Cape High’s Honor Society and captain of the tennis team. A past FFA club member, she participates in equestrian jumping competitions and is a volunteer tennis coach at Villages of Five Points. Maryann will major in biology in the University of Delaware’s honors program.

Maryann credits her parents for her success.

“I have always worked very hard to do well in school, and I owe that to my parents’ support and encouragement,” she said.

The state has named Secretary of Education Scholars every year since 1984. The number of scholars from each school is based on enrollment, and principals select students based on academic records and community service.
