Cape hockey holds back Milford 2-0

Vikings improve to 6-1 but fight for victories
September 30, 2019

There’s blood in the saltwater at Cape Henlopen. This is a season where teams feel they have a shot at the nine-time field hockey state champions.

“We have to battle every game,” said coach Kate Austin after the Vikings held off an enthusiastic Milford team 2-0. The win improved the Vikings’ record to 6-1, including 1-0 wins over Tower Hill and Padua, and a 4-0 loss at Delmar.

Cape next faces Polytech, Smyrna and Lake Forest.

“Every season is its own journey and writes its own story,” Austin said. “We are already working with an eye toward being better in the state tournament. This team will benefit from hard/close games. We are still evaluating all our players by position.”

Reagan Ciabattoni scored unassisted at 18:08 in the first half. Goalie Julie Heffernan got her first start of the season and made three real-deal saves in the first half off Milford corners.

Cape was able breathe easier late in the second half, when Ciabattoni found Sam Connors in a crowd, and the sophomore beat goalie Eve Sekcinski with 10:53 left for the 2-0 Cape victory.

The Vikings had a 14-3 shots on goal advantage and a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Milford fell to 2-4 on the season.
