Hockey preseason play days are about running the roster in different combinations and configurations to learn where best to place people. It’s never about the scoreboard, but Cape never wants to get home-schooled in its own house.
Cape pitched four shutouts over four 30-minute scrimmages Aug. 22, besting Queen Anne’s, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Stephen Decatur and Madison.
The Vikings used three different goalies, including Jordynn Bowe, and freshmen Grace Hudson and Emma Rowley.
Cape graduated Izzy Mekulski, a two-year starter with a record of 33-4, including a state title in 2024.
The Vikings' 2026 edition features nine seniors: Layla Conn, Ally Diehl, Grace Heers, Isabel Mastrangelo, Angelina McCarthy, Mairead Rishko, Atia Sabbagh, Mackenzie Todd and Emily Wells.
The roster includes six juniors: Teagan Baker, Jordynn Bowe, Blair Chubb, Mikaela Gordon, Kailey McMahon and Ellen Ramsey.
Three sophomores made the varsity squad: Meredith Frederick, Daisy Hughes and Hazel Mancari.
Freshmen are Brynn Evick, Grace Hudson and Madori Torres, with Emma Rowley also covering JV goaltending duties.
Thirteen of the 22 athletes also play lacrosse.
Cape will host a 16-team play day Saturday, Aug. 29, using Champions and Legends stadiums turf fields and the two Bermuda fields.
There will also be eight JV teams.
The schedule has not been released but teams include: Cape, St. E’s of New Jersey, Charter, Caesar Rodney, Dover, Indian River, JM Bennett, Lake Forest, Parkside, Polytech, Queen Anne's, Stephen Decatur, Sussex Academy, Sussex Central, Sussex Tech and Woodbridge.
Cape opens the season Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Sussex Tech.
