Cape JV girls’ basketball tops Woodbridge 29-27 to stay unbeaten

Diana Nauman banks game-winner from dead corner
January 20, 2020

Diana Nauman, in front of her own bench, launched a three-point attempt from the dead corner with Cape trailing Woodbridge by a deuce with two minutes remaining.

“Oh no, that’s off,” the freshman shouted, but the ball caught the fair side of the window and followed an acute trajectory through the basket, hitting nothing but net. Cape led 28-27. Big 5 Hall of Fame play-by-play man Les Keiter would have called that shot a “ring-tailed howitzer.”

“I can’t believe it went in and we came back and won,” Diana said after the game, a little overwhelmed by the focus for a JV game. The battle of unbeaten teams was won by Cape 29-27, extending the winning streak of coach Martin Amis to 25 games over two seasons.

Cape let some air out of the ball in the final minute, but the Blue Raiders still had a couple of good looks. A big play in the final 30 seconds was Grace Totten with the ball on the front end of a frenzied fast break turning around and going back to half court, showing an awareness that the clock was her friend.

“That was such a smart move, and it was all her,” Amis said. “We never practice it. There are players on the JV squad that would be on the varsity in most other programs.”

Cape was led in scoring by Nauman and Ja’Onna Lee, each with eight points. Lee also had nine rebounds. Totten chipped in with seven points.

Woodbridge was led by De’Asya Jones with 12 points.

Cape also won at Stephen Decatur Jan. 16, 51-13, behind 20 points from Akira Perry and 10 from Lee.

“Akira and Ja’Onna, both freshmen, are varsity guards,” Amis said.

The Vikings (8-0) next play at Milford and Sussex Tech.
