A Cape player knocked down trying to score. The Cape girls' lacrosse team is back in the state finals after a 16-3 home victory over Caesar Rodney in the semifinals of the DIAA state tournament May 27.
Nine different players scored for Cape; they were powered by nine assisted goals.
Cape will play unbeaten Tower Hill at 3 p.m., Saturday, May 30, at Caesar Rodney High School. The Hillers beat Archmere 20-12 in the other semifinal game.
Cape will play Salesianum at noon in the boys' lacrosse state championship game. Cape defeated Smyrna 18-6 at Legends Stadium, while Salesianum rocked St. Andrew's 19-0 in the other semifinal.
“I’m really proud of how the girls played today," said coach Lindsey Underwood. "We made some adjustments defensively this week, and they were able to step in and make those changes in real time. Going into the state finals, we’re looking to continue that momentum with good defensive stops. Our offense has done a great job really sharing the ball, which is what we’ve been working on to get more people involved. Seeing Makenzie [Todd] and Mikaela [Gordon] step up today was great.”
Gordon and Haley Gamuciello each had three goals. Todd, Mairead Rishko and Regan Best each had two goals. Single goals were scored by Avary Miller, Claire Lopez, Amara Fruchtman and Ally Diehl.
Assists for Cape were Lopez with five, Rishko with two, and Miller and Todd each with one.
Goalie Jordan Murray had six saves over the first three quarters.
“Jordan was really locked in today," Underwood said. "It was great to see her step up under pressure.”
Caesar Rodney was led by Delaney Miklus, Logan Fuchs and Ella Brown each with a goal.
“We are going to need to play a complete game from first draw to last draw against Tower Hill to come out with the win," Underwood. “The team will have to play as one unit with no let downs.”
Notes: Caesar Rodney is coached by Gina Voss, a goalie on Cape's 2012 state championship team. The Riders finished the season with an overall record of 12-5, reaching the semifinals for the second straight year. Underwood goes after her eighth state title since taking over from P.J. Kesmodel in 2017. Coach Wiz Applegate of Tower Hill has won five state titles for the Hillers, the last coming in 2008. Cape has been in the state finals every year since 2009, winning 15 state championships. Cape lost in finals 10-9 to Tatnall in 2023 and St. Andrew's beat Cape in the 2005 finals 14-9. There was no season in 2020 due to COVID.
