Cape lacrosse erupted quickly hosting Tatnall in the quarterfinal round of the women’s state tournament May 18, sprinting to a 15-1 first-half lead, then cruising home for a 21-2 victory. Cape has 34 straight tournament wins over the last 11 years and has an average of 17 goals scored and 4 allowed in opening-round games.

“The mantra is focus, focus, focus,” said coach Lindsay Underwood after the game. “We play Ursuline in the semifinals; they have 10 seniors on the squad and a Hall of Fame coach in Feffie Barnhill. They will have us thoroughly scouted, and they have major talent at key positions.”

Ursuline beat Saint Andrew’s 21-6 in the quarterfinal round to reach the semis. The Raiders lost to Cape in Lewes May 10, 16-9.

The Vikings played the game without injured starters Emily Monigle and Cameron Baldwin.

“We lost our first two goalies to start the season and we were down two starters today, and that’s just the way it goes sometimes,“ Underwood said. “Every team has their own issues to deal with. Laci Dixon and Destiny Kusen have been great for us in goal all season.”

Cape’s Chloe Schaeffer, who missed her junior season with a foot injury, was lights out for the Vikings scoring six athletic goals. She was joined on the hat trick rack by Alia Marshall with four and Ella Rishko with three. Sawyer Walker, Lola Messick and Meredith Lockwood each scored two goals, while Jackie Cannon and Kelly Bragg scored one apiece.

Tatnall goals were scored by Katrina Cattermole and Teryn Singer.

Eight of Cape’s goals came off assists delivered by Messick 3, Lockwood 2, Haley Craig 1, Rishko 1, Riley Keen 1.

Laci Dixon had 5 saves while Destiny Kusen had 2.  Tatnall’s Carlie McKenry recorded 12 saves.

The semifinal round features Cape versus Ursuline at Dover, while Archmere will play Padua at Caravel in the other semifinal. Both games are at 7 p.m. The state championship game will be Thursday, May 23.
