The Cape girls' lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter of the state championship game versus unbeaten Tower Hill May 30 to win 17-11.
The win marked the 16th state title for the Vikings since 2009. Coach Lindsey Underwood won her eighth state title as head coach, tying her with the Zen Master PJ Kesmodel.
The Three M Trio of Makenzie, Mikaela and Murray showed up in primetime like they did in the semifinal win over Caesar Rodney.
Mikaela Gordon had four goals off three assists from Mackenzie Todd, who also scored a goal.
“They were face guarding Claire [Lopez], so we had to pick it up," Gordon said. “I was just open, cutting to the goal and Mackenzie put it on my stick."
Clever Claire Lopez picked her spots and finished with two goals and three assists.
Jordan Murray, a senior transfer from Maryland, was credited with three saves.
“This is the most fun I’ve ever had playing lacrosse,” she said. "My teammates were so accepting of me and made me feel so welcome."
Haley Gamuciello was quick to the cage early and often, scoring five goals in the game.
“Coach gave me the green light to take advantage of open space, so I was going to goal early more than I usually do," she said.
Mairead Rishko and Ally Diehl each had one goal.
Tower Hill goals were scored by Lucia Colasante with five, Charlotte Vanin with four and single goals from Maise Cer and Kate Ingleby.
Alexa Rohrbacher was credited with nine saves.
Tower Hill is a young team with just five seniors. Cape graduates seven, but has a ton of talent returning.
