“Rolling in the Deep” by Adele is the theme song for the Cape field hockey roster. Unlike the steep beaches in Rehoboth, there is no drop-off. There are 21 varsity players, all of whom can play multiple positions.

Cape wrapped up preseason play Aug. 29, featuring two talented yet inexperienced goalies in Jordynn Bowe and Grace Hudson who faced no shots and therefore yielded no goals. The Vikings are 8-0 in these shortened preseason games, but the mission is chemistry and finding out how best to configure the talent.  

“It sounds like a cliche to say we have talented players who all get along and like each other, but that is the nature of the team this year,” said coach Kate Austin.  “The goalies get their work in practice. We have confidence in Jordynn and Grace.”

There were 16 varsity and eight JV teams for the play day extravaganza. Games were 25 minutes with a running clock and a common horn.

An overall assessment of the talent pool is impossible, as many teams have yet to post rosters with names, and those with names have no numbers. Many teams are still deciding if they have enough players to break off a separate JV team.

"I thought we had a great day," Austin said. "We played fast but made good decisions most of the time. It was good to limit circle entries and give up no corners, and I'm confident in our goalkeepers; they are under fire plenty during practice! They both had a great week. The theme last week was problem solving, and I think they were able to put together a good showing after a demanding week."

Cape opens the season Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Sussex Tech, then hosts Kent Island Friday, Sept. 11, and Queen Anne's Saturday, Sept. 12.
