Cape soccer falls to top-seeded Charter in quarterfinals

May 23, 2019

The eighth-seeded Cape Henlopen soccer team fell to Wilmington Charter 2-0 in the DIAA quarterfinals May 20, ending the Vikings’ season at 11-5.

The first half was a defensive battle for Cape, as goalie Lucy Siranides made several key saves in the first 10 minutes of the game. She ended the game with eight stops.

“We came into the game wanting to shut down Sheyenne [Allen],” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We fronted her and backed her with Lindsey Reynolds and Claire Rasin. They did a very good job. One of our concerns was double-teaming her on restarts. We didn’t do that on their second goal. We played hard and we played tough, but in the end they were the better team.”

The game remained scoreless for the first half. The Force got on the board at the 47-minute mark with a goal from freshman Gabi Boffa.

“The entire game we had a great defensive effort,” Kilby said. “The first half was great. You always worry about transitioning into the second half. Are we going to be able to counter all they change? They transitioned through and got their goal, which was well earned.”

Sheyenne Allen scored at the 77-minute mark to seal the victory for the No. 1 seed.

“I feel like it was a combination of just not executing on the chances we had going forward on offense,” Siranides said. ”They are a physically powerful team, and I think it’s hard to keep up with them sometimes.”

”I just love my team and I’m gonna miss them a lot,” said Cape senior defender Darby Klopp. “We were really close.”

Wilmington Charter plays Middletown in the semifinals.
