Cape soccer outlasts Seahawks 1-0

September 25, 2018

On a day more suited for ducks Sept. 24, the Vikings rained down 10 shots on the Seahawks of Sussex Academy, converting on one at the 20-minute mark by former SAS player Kannex Camarco. The goal was the only one of the game, as Cape secured a 1-0 win.

“We were pleased with the result,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We were even more pleased with our third straight shutout. The boys played well against a determined Sussex Academy side that has a bevy of club players, just as we do. This match is quickly turning into a local rivalry that will soon warrant everyone’s attention. We need to continue to work hard and show the community that Cape soccer is the destination program for all kids.”

Cape outshot the Seahawks 10-4 and held a 9-2 edge in corners.

Kilby was quick to praise his former Seahawk.

“It was a big night for Kannex Camarco,” he said. “He returned to his old stomping grounds and scored the game’s only goal. I am proud of the way he carried himself, and he had the full support of the Cape program as he helped us earn the result.”

Camarco scored on a 40-yard direct kick halfway through the first half.

The Cape defense has tallied three shutouts so far this season.

“Luke Johnson, Connor Hochrein and Dane Palmer are truly holding down the back third,” said Kilby. “They have only given up one goal in four games.”

Make that one goal in five games, as the Vikings continued their winning ways with a 6-0 win over Seaford on Sept. 25. Goals were scored by Ilarion Swallow, Danio Somoza-Lima, Juan Larez-Carrillo, Kannex Camarco and Christopher Gonzalez. Bradley Seneus recorded two assists.

The Vikings will look to keep it going versus Sussex Central on Thursday, Sept. 27. They will then travel to Gunston School in Maryland for a match at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1.
