Cape soccer squeaks by Laurel 1-0

October 10, 2019

Cape senior Eid Nouhra took a pass from Danio Somoza-Lima at the 25-minute mark and put it past Laurel keeper Jailon Gillespie for the only score in the Vikings’ 1-0 win over the Bulldogs Oct. 8.

“We really battled with Laurel,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “Their goal keeper kept them in the game today. Eid was able to put one away for us.”

Cape and the Bulldogs each took six shots on goal. Cape goalies Alan Marin-Quiroz and Forest Dotterer teamed for six saves, while Laurel’s Gillespie made five stops.

“I thought we went into the game not expecting Laurel to give us the battle that they did,” said senior Luke Johnson. “We controlled the ball most of the game, but just couldn’t get passes strung together to go forward with strength. To finish strong in the conference, we just need to really focus up in practice and in the games and work really hard to get the best we can be. Having Connor [Hochrein] and Nate [Loucks] out for a few games is definitely a challenge, but we have a lot of players stepping up and filling in their spots while they are recovering.”

“We are banged up with a lot of injuries, and we are fortunate and happy to get out of Laurel with a win,” Kilby said.

The 5-2-1 Vikings were set to travel to Smyrna Thursday, Oct. 10 to face the 0-8 Eagles.
