Caper sophomore Sara Craig delivers to the dish. The Cape and Sussex Academy softball teams each upset higher-seeded teams May 19, to advance to the second round of the state tournament.
No. 18 Cape exploded for a 15-3 win over No. 15 Brandywine, while No. 17 Sussex Academy snuck by No. 16 Pauda 8-7.
The Vikings used consistent offense to earn the winning, scoring runs in six of seven innings. They punctuated the win with a five-run seventh inning.
Freshman Makaila Sellers, senior Alivia Longo and senior Madison Lubiniecki each hit a double in the win. Sophomore Jordynn Bowe recorded a triple.
The Seahawks won a back-and-forth game against Padua. After scoring a run in the first two innings, Padua responded with a three-run bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Sussex Academy plated two in the top of the third to retake the lead, but the Pandas tallied two of their own in the bottom of the third to take it back.
The Seahawks tied the game with a run in the fourth, then went ahead with another run in the fifth, but Padua again responded with two in the bottom of the fifth to take a one-run advantage. Sussex Academy plated two runs in the top of the sixth, then shut down the Pandas over the final two innings to eek out a victory.
No individual statistics are available for the Sussex Academy game.
Cape is set to travel to No. 2 Conrad at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 21, while Sussex Academy is headed to No. 1 Caravel to play at 5 p.m., May 21.
